Mary Carlile Barber Willett, long time resident of Bardstown, died at home Saturday May 3, 2025 at the age of 93. She was predeceased by her parents, Ham and Prudence Clarkson Barber and her husband of 62 years, Charles D. Willett, Sr.
She is survived by her eight children, Prudence Kramer (Marc), Mary Catherine Turcotte (Jack), Harriet Hancock (Bill), Jerry Willett, (Ellen), Cecelia Hansell, Charles D. "Sam" Willett, Jr (Kathy), Alex Willett, George Willett (Renee) •
Mrs Willett was born and raised in Springfield, KY and always proud of her Washington County heritage. She graduated from St. Dominic grade school. She then attended St.
Catherine Academy in Springfield, graduating as valedictorian of her class. She was known for her wit, good humor and kindness.
Mary Carlile was a beautiful young lady with many interested suitors. When charming Charlie came along, the game changed and she married June 28, 1949 after just turning 18.
They had a wonderful marriage with a love of travel, friends, Notre Dame and Navy football games, college visits with their sons and daughters. In Charlie's last moments, she held his hand and said "this is one more trip I would like to take with you" and now she is with him again.
She was a voracious reader and always had a book beside her. An early adapter of technology, her iphone and Ipad were in constant use for card games, newspapers and email from friends and grandchildren.
She was also an avid sports fan, particularly devoted to horse racing and the annual NCAA college basketball tournament. An accomplished and respected player, she loved her bridge and also enjoyed bourbon, not necessarily in that order.
Throughout her long life, she was good company and a devoted friend to many. She excelled in her primary vocation as a wife and mother and was adored by her 8 children, 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She had a remarkable memory, an engaging and genuine interest in all she encountered.
Her funeral mass will be held Monday, May 12, 11 AM at St. Joseph Proto Cathedral in Bardstown. Visitation will precede the mass in the church at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to St. Joseph Parish, Bethlehem High School, St Dominic Grade School in Springfield.
The family extends their sincere appreciation to her Nurse Practitioner Angels, Millie Riggs and Angela Ballard. Sister and daughter, Cece provided loving care and companionship for many years and we are truly grateful.
Barlow Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
