Frances Velma Spalding, 98, of Bardstown, passed away Saturday September 30, 2023 in Bardstown. Velma ("Toots" to friends and family) touched many people with her remarkable talents in baking, sewing, and design. She will be remembered as a mother who gave her best to whatever task she chose. Her children and friends were always impressed with her sharp style.
Velma was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph David Spalding; grandson, Daniel Ewing Martin; parents, Patrick and Gertrude Mattingly; sisters, Stella Wimsett, Dorothy Nalley, Celeste Gertrude Mattingly; and brother, Paul Mattingly.
Velma is survived by one daughter, Phyllis Porter (Tod) of Lexington, KY; two sons, Timothy Mitchell Spalding (Mary Jane) of Bardstown, and Joseph Larry Spalding of Bardstown. She leaves behind one grandson, Jason Spalding (Kalisa) of Bardstown; three great-grandchildren, Carter, Cash, and Claire Spalding; and also many nieces and nephews.
Velma's funeral service will be 12 pm Wednesday October 4, 2023 at Barlow Funeral Home, with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery. Rev. Jacob Zulu will officiate. Visitation will be 11 am - 12 pm Wednesday October 4, 2023 at Barlow Funeral Home.
The family would like to acknowledge Windsor Gardens, Signature Healthcare at Colonial Nursing Home, and Hospice of Nelson County for their loving care of our mother.
