Dr. Charles Spalding Obituary

Dr. Charles B. Spalding, 92, of Bardstown, passed away Sunday January 21, 2018 in Bardstown.  He will be remembered as a man who loved and served his community.  Never one for wander lust, he believed there was no place better than his hometown of Bardstown, KY.  He established The Family Medical Center and practiced family medicine with his brother, Harry for 40 years.  During his tenure at The Family Medical Center, he delivered over 2,000 babies, made house calls, and served as the Nelson County Coroner for more than 30 years.

Dr. Spalding was valedictorian of St. Joseph Preparatory School, and captain of the football team.  In 1942 he earned all-state honorable mention player, competing in the East West All-Star game.

After graduation, he joined the Navy and served as an ensign attached to the USS Fargo; the flag ship in the Mediterranean Sea.

He was a member of Phi Chi Medical Fraternity, graduating from University of Louisville Medical School in 1953.

A steadfast leader in the community, he served on the boards of: Flaget Memorial Hospital, Farmers Bank, the Nelson County Board of Health, the Board of Licensure for Nursing Home Administrators in Frankfort, and the Board of Visiting Nurses in Nazareth, KY.  He has also served as past president of the Kentucky Academy of Family Physicians and Vice President of the KY Medical Association.  He was named “Family Doctor of the Year” in 1980, and won the Catholic Schools Distinguished Alumni award from the Archdiocese of Louisville in 1999.

In his spare time he was an avid golfer, and enjoyed a friendly game of tennis and socializing with his wife and friends “on the hill”.

A lifelong member of St. Joseph Basilica, he especially enjoyed being a member of the choir during his retirement years, and found great comfort in music.

A kind and patient man, with playful sense of humor; he was a loving father and will be remembered by his children with great affection.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frances Boone and Tom Spalding; brother, Thomas Spalding CFX; and his beloved wife of 58 years, Chris Kindervater Spalding.

He is survived by his brother, Dr. Harry Spalding (Sandra); eight children, Tom Spalding, Chip Spalding, Ellen Hatfield (Greg), Neal Spalding (Barbara), Beth Spalding, Matt Spalding, Charlotte Spalding, and Chrissy Delay (Bill); five grandchildren, Jennifer Hagan (Rick), Tiane Redmon (Brian), Gregory Hatfield, Matthew Spalding (Natalie), and Ryan Spalding; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

His Funeral Mass will be 11:00 am Thursday January 25, 2018 at Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral, with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery.  Rev. Terry Bradshaw will officiate.  Visitation will be 2 to 8 pm Wednesday January 24 and 9 to 10:15 am Thursday January 25 at Barlow Funeral Home.  A prayer service will be held Wednesday evening.
